DSQ Week in Bodrum
Bodrum Hosts Annual DSQ Week Sailing Event

Insufficient wind prevailed in the CFM-BAYK Winter Trophy 6th Leg races on the Bodrum course where winds generally blow strong.
An unsettled weather pattern prevailed that was inclined to drop in strength rather than increase its power.

DIFFERENT COURSES FOR DIFFERENT WEATHER CONDITIONS
In the leg where 43 boats registered, at the briefing held on Saturday, May 5th, Chief Race Officer Ayberk OLCAY started and finished his speech with the weather.
“We are facing a leg where different weather conditions await us. For this reason, we have prepared different courses.” He began his remarks.

“Up to this point in the trophy, due to having incomplete races because of lack of wind or strong winds, we want to race you as much as possible.
A different wind prevails on the course, rain tomorrow.
Today we want to use the wind that will come in short intervals off Görecek Island without wasting time.”
After saying this, he invited everyone to the course.

START LINE IN THE WIND EFFECT AREA
The entire fleet departed from Milta Bodrum Marina as early as possible.
The committee, setting up the start line off Görece Island, aimed to get well into the windy area rather than waiting for wind off Bodrum.
As the wind was constantly shifting between Southwesterly and Westerly directions, the committee was making course preparations according to the changing conditions.
Finally, once the wind settled, start procedures began.
IRC B and Support classes will make the first start. The announced route is approximately 16.5 nautical miles.

The wind is blowing from 225 degrees at 5-7 knots.
The first start is given to IRC B 1 and Support classes at 12:05.

UNEXPECTED COLLISION SOUND
Near the start buoy, a collision occurred between ENGİN DENİZ racing in IRC B 3, ICEBERK ICE YACHTING, and KONTİKİ M racing in IRC B 1 class. ICEBERK ICE YACHTING struck KONTİKİ M amidships at this moment. A hole opened in KONTİKİ M and the two boats remained locked together for a long time.

Among the boats separated from each other by efforts, KONTIKI M could not participate in the race due to damage and headed to Milta Bodrum Marina.
ICEBERK ICE YACHTING made its start despite all these delays and began running on the course. Despite the time losses, it became the first boat of its group at the end of the race.
It did, but it was DSQ at the end of the hearing held on May 6.
At the end of the same hearing, the ENGIN DENIZ boat was also DSQ.

While the fleet was heading towards Kargı Island and Köçek shoal, the start procedures for IRC A classes could not begin.

IRC A'S NOT GETTING THE BUOY RACE
Although the committee had planned a buoy race for these classes, the wind constantly shifting 30-40 degrees brought the committee to the idea of implementing a geographical route to be sailed on the same course instead of a race to be abandoned.
There was no increase in wind strength and at 12:45 IRC A3 and 4 made their start, and at 12:50 IRC A 0 and 1 made their start.

After the entire fleet completed their turns between Kargı Island and Köçek Shoal, they headed towards Çelebi Island.
Meanwhile, the dropping wind caused the boats to separate from each other and led the committee to shorten the course.

After the calm, individual rounding of Çelebi Island, the wind dropped further and the boats tried to reach the finish line.

ENGINE TO AVOID GROUNDING
The weather dropped so much that SHAK SHUKA-ORSA SAILING TEAM was forced to start the engine to avoid running aground on the shores of Görecek Island.
Naturally, following the hearing; Twenty Percent Score Penalty.

STRUGGLING SKIPPER, COMMITTEE RIGHT THERE
The boats were continuing their efforts to cross the finish line. One of these efforts occurred on the KAYK APAZ-KÖMÜRCÜOĞLU boat competing in IRC A 3 class. When the actions near the finish line (manipulating the helm) were recorded on video by the committee...
As a result of the hearing, DSQ because it fell under the scope of Prohibited Actions in Racing.

When the finishes were recorded;
In IRC AO COMET A/ARKAS M A T SAILING TEAM(Serhat ALTAY)

In very hot and windless weather, boats that started their engines after the finish headed towards Milta Marina.
In the evening, at the reception held at Marina Yacht Club, the CFM BAYK Winter Trophy 5th Leg cups found their owners.

CLOUDY, HAZY AND GREY BODRUM
On Sunday morning, May 6th, we woke up to a cloudy, hazy, grey Bodrum.
Meteorology says rain, but there is not a drop until the end of the day.
Today the committee is waiting for the fleet off Bodrum ship loading pier.

Wind is from 225 degrees at 12-14 knots. It will be a beautiful race day.
When procedures begin, the wind shifts between 170 degrees and 210 degrees.
The Chief Race Officer says the wind is "shifty".
The wind takes offense and plays as much as it can.

Finally it settles at 180 degrees at 7-9 knots and start procedures begin.
At 11:40, IRC B and SUPPORT classes complete their starts.
The fleet rounds the windward mark and sets course to Kıstak Island, leaving Kara Island to starboard, while the wind drops significantly. Everyone wonders how the 17 nautical mile course will end.

Thank God the committee keeps announcing; "Course Shortening may occur if necessary"

DEAR POSEIDON, DID YOU BAN BUOY RACING FOR IRC A?
The committee announces that due to extremely variable wind conditions, they will also set a geographical course for IRC A classes.
Start, windward mark-start buoy-Kara Island dock-Kıstak Island rounding course. It will finish off Bodrum. Approximately 19 nautical miles.
IRC A 2 and 3 start at 12.55, IRC A 0 and 1 start at 13.00.

WE GOT BURNED; WE'RE OCS
There are premature starters. Those who hear the committee's insistent warnings turn back and restart, but TURUVA 1 is unaware of being premature.
She sails so beautifully, provides us with such beautiful images that in the end, we who are filming are the most saddened by her being OCS.

Beautifully, as the boats round Kara Ada with fierce competition, the wind keeps diminishing.
The committee boat collecting the buoy comes to Tavşan Burnu location to shorten the course.
The fleet leaders are approaching the finish line reluctantly, weakly.
As the first finishes are taken, heavy rain starts to descend on the mountains.

After a while, as the wind starts to lose its strength further, another course shortening for IRC A class.

Those trying to catch their flights are struggling.
4 boats have to abandon the race after all this effort.

At the end of the race;
IRC A Overall KAPKARA (Erhan UZUN)
IRC A 1st BODRUM/KEYİF 60 (Erhan EROĞLU)
IRC A 2 SHAK SHUKA-ORSA SAILING TEAM (Yasemin AKYIL)
