MARMARIS COMES ALIVE AGAIN
MARMARİS YİNE ŞENLENDİ

The Campus Cup, organized annually by Miyc, was held this year under the main sponsorship of Nurol Bank.
On March 16-17, 35 teams from 24 different universities participated in this event.

FIRST APPLICANTS QUALIFIED FOR SUPPORT
As in recent years, the organization provided financial support to the first 20 teams that applied.
Of course, since these applications were made via email at the announced time, the teams were determined in the first second of the starting time.
Those who sent emails as of 12:00 qualified for the 250 EU support. Those at 12:01 remained as reserves.

AS GRADUATES LEAVE, NEW ONES EMERGE
While student athletes competing each year in university teams graduate and leave, new ones take their place.
The cycle continues.

INSTRUCTORS ALSO ON THE COURSE
In recent years, we are witnessing that school administrations are also beginning to increase their support for sailing activities.
Some university team instructors personally participate in the races as observers.
p>

These and similar events are enlivened by the participation of athletes and teams.
Those who were introduced to sailing during their university years and wish to continue with the sport find new teams for themselves and take their places on the courses.
Fresh, dynamic blood is thus injected into the sailing sport.
In recent years, this number has grown to a significant level.
We are even witnessing young people choosing professional seamanship.

MARMARIS LONGING FOR SUNNY SUMMER
The sun had fully shown its face in Marmaris, which was awaiting the youth on the weekend when the race would take place.
Of course, due to the seasonal transition effect, the temperature difference between day and night was at peak levels. Summer heat during the day, winter cold at night.

RACE RULES MEETING
When registrations closed on Friday, April 15, Aslan ÖZÇAKIR, one of our experienced referees serving on the Protest Committee, held an informative meeting with the youth about general race rules.

COLORFUL TEAM OUTFITS
In the evening, the opening party took place at the club facilities.
What caught our attention at the party was that compared to previous years, the teams' uniforms had multiplied, become more stylish, and therefore created a colorful atmosphere.
Of course, the contribution of professional sailing instructors and sailing schools that brought these teams together in this positive development cannot be overlooked.

YOUTH IN RACE MANAGEMENT
On Saturday morning, April 16, the microphone was in the hands of the youth at the briefing.
Ezgi KALAYCI will serve as chief umpire, and Fatmagül YAZGAN as protest committee chairman.
It was announced that 3 races were scheduled over 2 days, courses would be posted on the race course, and protests, if any, should be filed according to the rules.

METEOROLOGY WILL ALLOW RACING
From a meteorological perspective, no adverse weather conditions are expected on race days.
Wind is expected to strengthen gradually on the first day, and slowly increase in force on the second day.

When the boats departed from Netsel Marina, the committee had taken its position off Yalancı Boğaz, and course preparations were nearly complete.p>
A steady wind blowing from 315 degrees in the range of 12-16 knots was a harbinger of a colorful race.
Of course, the "Yankee" flag indicating that personal flotation devices were mandatory had been hoisted on the committee boat.
Chief Race Officer Ezgi KALAYCI was announcing to all classes that the first race of the day would follow the R-1 course from the Miyc routes.
35 boats would have 2 starts.

First start for IRC 1-2-3 groups, second for IRC 4-5 and SUPPORT classes.
Approximately a 6 nautical mile course. There are offset and gate roundings. Buoy distance is 1.5 nautical miles.
The starts take place at 12:05 and then at 12:10, and the boats begin racing.

An intense competition begins with the strong steady wind.
As the turning marks are passed, the wind starts to exceed 20 knots.
Of course, the trials also begin with the spinnaker for those who hoist it and those who cannot master it.

THE RACE ISN’T OVER WITHOUT ROUNDING THE OFFSET
While continuing without rounding the offset buoy, we witness those who realize the situation and make up for it, as well as those who hit the buoy.
We also see those requesting help from the committee while struggling with the spinnaker.
The committee’s calming, helpful approach is also commendable. p>
When the first race, which resembled a familiarization tour for the teams, was completed;
In IRC 1, ITU (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2, DOĞUŞ (Fifty Fifty)
In IRC 3, BİLGİ (Orsa Cheese Sailing)
In IRC 4, ITU (Mınx Hedef Yelken)
In IRC 5, BAHÇEŞEHİR (M2)
In DESTEK Class, ODTU (Aruna)
became the boats leaving their competitors behind.

COMMITTEE DOESN'T TAKE RISKS WHEN WIND STRENGTHENS
After the first race, the wind continues to increase in strength, and when preparations for the 2nd race begin, it shows 19 knots from 320 degrees.
The committee doesn't want to take risks and announces the same course again.
On the triangular course to be set with increasing wind, the boats may experience problems with squalls in front of Mares Otel, especially with spinnakers.
The committee takes into account the difficulty teams experience in strong winds.

THOSE WHO FAILED THE SPINNAKER TEST
At 14:10 and then at 14:20, the fleet starts racing.
Problems with spinnakers become increasingly apparent with the stiffening wind.
Did the wind come a bit too strong for the fleet?
Dangerous sailing maneuvers with unclosable spinnakers, and trawling sessions with spinnakers fallen into the sea are greeting our cameras.

WE NO LONGER PAY ATTENTION TO EMPTY PROTESTS
Meanwhile, protest after protest is being announced.
“Speaks the truth at the police station, gets confused in court” as the saying goes.
Of course, none of them extends to a hearing.
For us, it’s nothing more than taking extra notes.
Meanwhile, the competition in the classes is gradually showing itself.
Whether it’s luck or not, tomorrow’s final race will show.

When the day’s 2nd Race was completed without incident;
In IRC 1, ITU (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2, DOĞUŞ (Fifty Fifty)
In IRC 3, BİLGİ (Orsa Cheese Sailing)
In IRC 4, ITU (Mınx Hedef Yelken)
In IRC 5, BAHÇEŞEHİR (M2)
In DESTEK Class, ODTU (Nora)
are the boats leaving their competitors behind.

We are waiting for the results of the protests filed at the club. There’s no such thing, where did that come from!

AT THE DÖNER RESTAURANT IN THE CLUB GARDEN
In the evening, there's a race dinner at the club facilities.
The atmosphere is truly different with the young sailors.
The music is rhythmic, laughter is heard at all times. A colorful atmosphere.
When we can't resist and retreat to our hotels, descriptions of entertainment venues start on the race's WhatsApp communication channel.
The youngsters, it's their right.
We're off to bed.

EARLY BLOWING WIND
On Sunday morning, March 17, we also wake up early and do our exercise along the coastline.
The wind has already started in the early hours.
But it's blowing from the east. The Hisarönü Bay wind regime has reflected onto Marmaris Bay.
It blows from the east, then stops. Then it blows first from the west, then from the northwest, not strong but steady until sunset.

ON THE COURSE FOR THE FINAL RACE
This morning there's no briefing, we're on the course.
Of course, there's no trace of yesterday's wind.
The wind is blowing from 280 degrees, at 10-12 knots.
The committee announces that the final race course will be G-1 from the Miyc courses.

The geographical course, we'll be going outside the bay. p>
We had missed Kargataşı Island so much. It had longed for us too, let's remedy that.
Approximately 12 nautical miles to be covered. The turning buoy is 1 nautical mile away.
After the boats round this, off we go to Kargataşı Island.
The echo flag is still up on the mast.

WE DIDN'T HEAR THE COURSE, COULD YOU ANNOUNCE IT?
Since the course announcement made many times is not enough for some boats, it is repeated over and over with requested announcements.
This year, course announcements have started to become a problem on all race courses. Perhaps it should be connected to automatic announcement.

WAITING FOR 181
At 12:05, with the start given in front of Yalancı Boğaz, the first group finds itself in the race.
At 12:10, with the 2nd start given, the boats of this group are also on the course, but except for one boat.
HACETTEPE (Trident) with burgundy number 181, racing in the support group, is able to start 9 minutes later.
According to the published sailing instructions, with 1 minute left before the 10-minute start period expires.
THE STRAIT PASSAGE IS DECEPTIVE
The wind, which doesn't lose its strength, helps the boats head towards the strait after the turning buoy.
Group leaders and their competitors are in battle.
Spinnakers opened unnecessarily and then closed...

STRAIT PASSAGE DRIVES ONE MAD
When entering the strait, at the front of the fleet are EGE (Sütlaç), İTÜ (Mersin Yelken Akademisi) and YAŞAR(Lemon).
The strait is playing its usual tricks.
Depending on the location, there is wind or there isn't.
Those who lie down completely sheltered inside the boat, those watching their swaying spinnakers.

POSEIDON SAYS MARCH ON
Finally Poseidon says “march on fleet”.
From the mouth of İçmeler and off Turunç, the fleet with spinnakers is approaching Karga Taşı Island.
Those rounding the island from the inside, as always, are experiencing thrilling moments staying close to the island under the eaves.
Of course, among them are those who ran aground at this position in previous races...
And then there are those insisting on staying in the spinnaker for minutes where there is no wind, contrary to the fleet, which is not quite understandable.

OFF TURUNÇ FESTIVE-SNOW-CAPPED MOUNTAINS IN THE BACKGROUND p>
When the fleet leaders return from the island, they create a festive scene off Turunç together with those heading to the island.
At the same time, the snow-covered Fethiye mountains visible in the distance create a beautiful backdrop for the racing yachts.
The expected afternoon wind carries the fleet smoothly to the finish line.

When the 3rd race finishes;
In IRC 1, ITU (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2, DOĞUŞ (Fifty Fifty)
In IRC 3, BİLGİ (Orsa Cheese Sailing)
In IRC 4, ITU (Dönence)
In IRC 5, IYTE (Neslisu)
In DESTEK Class, ODTU (Nora)
are the boats leaving their competitors behind.

IF A PROTEST IS FILED, THE STAKES ARE HIGH
When the committee finishes the race and returns to the club building, protest time begins.
One yacht is planning to protest against their competitor due to spinnaker area, but are they sure or not, should they file it or not?
They don't show it, but we can see the hustle and bustle with our own eyes.
The protest form is in hand at the last minute but remains unfilled.

Results are announced;
In IRC 1, ITU (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2, DOĞUŞ (Fifty Fifty) p>
IRC 3: BİLGİ (Orsa Cheese Sailing)
IRC 4: ITU (Dönence)
IRC 5: BAHÇEŞEHİR(M2)
SUPPORT Class: ODTU (Nora)
They complete Nurolbank Campuscup 2019 as class winners.

The race has 2 major trophies
FLEET-1 (IRC-1-2-3)
ITU (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)

FLEET-2 (IRC-3-4-5)
BAHÇEŞEHİR(M2)

The awards ceremony begins immediately.
Turkish Sailing Federation President Özlem AKDURAK has come for the ceremony and is sharing these happy moments with the young sailors.
The President, in addition to presenting some awards, joins her alma mater Boğaziçi Üniversitesi team as they receive their trophy.
In her speech, she emphasizes that young people should not break away from the sport of sailing, and that they need them whether as athletes, referees, or administrators.

A warm, very warm, cheerful, enthusiastic atmosphere.
Thousands of thanks to those who caused these rankings to be formed, to those who provided sponsorship support.
Everything is worth it to see a smile on the faces of youngsters on the podiums.

The host of this beautiful organization, Miyc, also has a management change at the end of the month.
The current management will hand over the flag to different members, in order not to let the momentum decrease.
This exemplary behavior continues in a traditional manner in Marmaris.
Those who leave the management do not distance themselves from the club.
They are always ready to help their new friends for the bar to rise even higher.
We congratulate those who leave, and wish success to those who arrive when they come.
