A poetic song is often sung at weddings and other festive occasions. It originates from around Yalıkavak, which was formerly called Çökertme. Based on a true story, the song’s lyrics tell this tale; in the early years of the foundation of the Republic, a charming girl from Bitez Yalısı, Çakır Gülsüm, fell in love with a sailor, Halil. He returned her love, and they soon were engaged. The new mayor of Bodrum also loved Gülsüm, and he ordered the gendarmes to remove Halil. When Halil was sailing from Çökertme to Bodrum with his cargo, the gendarmes shot and killed him at Point Aspat. Thus the mayor won the woman he loved.
