Babakale Castle was built in 1726 by order of Sultan Ahmed III during the Ottoman Empire. The castle was constructed to prevent piracy and provide logistical support to the Ottoman Navy. Built by prisoners using limestone and sand mixture, the castle features a rectangular plan.
The castle complex includes a mosque, hamam (Turkish bath), and fountain. Upon completion of the construction, all prisoners were granted freedom but were required to settle in the village. The 5 km water pipeline supplying the castle was also laid by the prisoners.
Babakale is situated on Baba Burnu (Father's Point), which marks the westernmost point of the Asian continent. A lighthouse is located at the northwestern corner of the castle, serving as an important navigation aid for vessels.
