Hamidiye Bay

Hamidiye Bay is located half a nautical mile east of Kaleköy, offering a well-protected anchorage with deep water. A small islet lies at the western point of the shoreline. Anchoring depths range from 15 to 25 meters.

This historic bay provides excellent shelter from the prevailing Meltemi winds. A Coast Guard pier is located here with 5 meters depth at the head. The shoreline features impressive historical ruins including rock-cut tombs, ancient walls, and stone arches. A house can be found inland at the head of the bay. The well and shaded pavilion beneath a large tree offer an excellent spot for rest and refreshment.

During the Balkan Wars, the legendary Ottoman cruiser Hamidiye and her commander Rauf Orbay used this bay as a strategic hideout during naval operations against enemy vessels. The bay takes its name from this historic warship. A Turkish flag painted on the rocks remains preserved to this day, serving as a poignant reminder of this significant period in Turkish naval history.
