MARMARIS IS DIFFERENT WITH YOUNG PEOPLE
MARMARİS GENÇLERLE BİR BAŞKA

On March 31st-April 1st, over five hundred vibrant young people enlivened the Marmaris course.
From different cities of Turkey, 38 sailing teams from 25 different universities engaged in fierce competition on both days.
Marmaris weather conditions gave the university students a final morale boost before the finals.

THEY BOTH ENJOYED AND COMPETED
Universities that established Sailing Clubs in past years and have been racing boats on courses for a long time participated in MİYC Campus Cup 2018 with several teams.

The university boats concentrated on certain pontoons within Netsel Marina, reflecting an atmosphere of festivity.
This year, MİYC, celebrating the 10th year of the event it launched, provided financial support to the first 20 boats that registered for the race.

Generally, teams have entered into serious preparations for this and similar university races with their tacticians and coaches over time.

Compared to previous years, team arrangements have settled, and race entry demands were even challenging the organization.
With young people on the course and on the boats, MİYC assigned both the Chief Race Officer position and the Protest Committee Chairmanship to experienced young professionals for the weekend.

CHIEF RACE OFFICER FATMANUR YAZGAN
She has been involved in sailing for 15 years. She started sailing in Çanakkale, then continued her sailing career at İstanbul Galatasaray Yelken Kulübü.
She is currently working as a coach and race officer.
She is also a student in the Physical Education Instructor Department at Marmara Üniversitesi.

PROTEST COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN ONUR USLU
26 years old. He started sailing at İstanbul Yelken Kulübü.
After racing at this club for 12 years, he retired from competitive sailing.
He works as a race officer and customs consultant assistant.

THIS WEATHER IS RACEABLE
A perfect racing atmosphere prevails in Marmaris.
There is nothing to doubt about the race from a meteorological perspective.
So, it falls to the young sailors to race

The briefing that took place on Saturday morning, March 31st, was quite crowded. Chief Umpire Fatmanur YAZGAN and Protest Committee Chairman Onur USLU are explaining the rules and making announcements.
Chief Umpire Fatmanur YAZGAN expresses gratitude on behalf of the committee and organization for the increased interest in Campus Cup.
She says they have planned 4 races over 2 days and that they desire to conduct 3 races today.
As for what the competitors want to say, it becomes clear that questions and statements will not go unheard.

HANDICAP ADJUSTMENT REQUEST
The request for re-evaluation of handicaps that has been voiced in the WhatsApp group with all officials and competitors over the last 2 days, along with the justifications, is being explained by the young sailors.
They are giving examples of handicap adjustments made half an hour before the race.
They want an overall classification.

While explaining the difficulties of correcting this last-minute formalized proposal in line with the requests, the promise of such an arrangement next year is given to the participants by MİYC President İhsan KALAYCI.

COME ON YOUNG SAILORS, TO THE COURSE
All boats take their positions on the course without wasting time. The boats look even more colorful with the youth. The press shows great interest in the races. The course is already set.

On both days, the races will take place inside Marmaris Bay. Therefore, there is no geographical route.
As a route, the R-3 route from MİYC routes will be sailed by all groups. The competition will take place over approximately 6 nautical miles.

Throughout the entire race, starts will take place in 2 groups.
With the wind at 145 degrees at 8-10 knots, start preparations begin off Marmaris.
At 11:55, IRC 1-2-3 start, and at 12:00, IRC 4-5-6 and ALOA 27s start.

At the turning buoy in front of Yalancı Strait, the rankings are gradually becoming clear. The leading boats of their classes are maintaining their positions as they proceed to the balloon mark.

In the 2nd leg, the wind strength is starting to increase, albeit slightly. At the end of this leg, boats finishing are waiting for the remaining boats to complete the race before the day's 2nd race.

As the fleet speeds up with the increasing wind and completes their finishes;
In IRC 1 YEDİTEPE ÜNİVERSİTESİ(Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2 BAHÇEŞEHİR ÜNİVERSİTESİ(Truva 1)
In IRC 3 BAHÇEŞEHİR ÜNİVERSİTESİ(MX)
In IRC 5 ODTÜ (Boomerang)
In IRC 6 BAHÇEŞEHİR ÜNİVERSİTESİ(M2)
In ALOA 27 İSTANBUL ÜNİVERSİTESİ(Saturnus)
These are the boats leaving their competitors behind.

Without delay, preparations for the 2nd race begin. The course is the same. The wind is increasing slightly compared to the first race, but its direction is shifting to 125 degrees.
At 13:45, IRC 1-2-3 start, at 13:50, IRC 4-5-6 and ALOA 27 start. p>

We witness the teams treating their first race as a warm-up and training session. Tactics are gradually being initiated according to competitors. Maneuvers are accelerating. The coordination within the boats is becoming increasingly clear.
The waters off Yalancı Boğaz are producing stronger winds compared to those off Marmaris.
This provides both good competition and excellent visuals.

At the end of the 2nd race;
In IRC 1 YAŞAR UNIVERSITY (Lemon)
In IRC 2 BAHÇEŞEHİR UNIVERSITY (Truva 1)
In IRC 3 BAHÇEŞEHİR UNIVERSITY (MX)
In IRC 4 DOĞUŞ UNIVERSITY (Pupa)
In IRC 5 BEYKENT UNIVERSITY (Papirus)
In IRC 6 BAHÇEŞEHİR UNIVERSITY (M2)
In ALOA 27 İSTANBUL UNIVERSITY (Saturnus)
These are the boats leaving their competitors behind.

WHAT IS FATMANUR’S FAULT?
Although the youngsters, who have sailed 2 races on the same course, might have thought about experiencing Marmaris before the 3rd race, the Chief Umpire
is initiating preparations for the 3rd race, that’s the plan.
p>

The wind has picked up. Course is MİYC Route 0-1. Approximately 6 nautical miles will be raced again.

Wind is at 15 knots from 130 degrees.
At 15:45, IRC 1-2-3 classes start, followed by IRC 4-5-6 and ALOA 27 at 15:50.
Teams have firmly established their group coordination, competitors’ tactics have been decoded.
Different boats with different performances, different speeds – Marmaris inner harbor is almost completely filled with racing boats at all positions.

DON’T TOUCH THE HELM; CISS
The wind is increasing and decreasing. The tacticians’ efforts are worth watching.
Some almost seem tempted to touch the helm from a distance at times.

After completing two races, just as we say “the rankings of the boats racing in the 3rd race are almost starting to settle,” the surprises begin as well.

The boats are leaving their competitors behind.

As the boats completing the day with 3 races were heading to Netsel Marina, preparations for the evening organization had already begun at MİYC facilities.

While the famous döner stand took its place in the prime corner, beautiful music was warming up the atmosphere. Young people coming from different cities of Turkey were enjoying the night.

The event at the ceremony area was ending with messages in the established WhatsApp group, as the young people were heading to Marmaris venues, describing the places to each other and negotiating with the venues.

On Sunday, April 1st, the wind had already started playing tricks on the course. The committee intended to start the race as soon as possible;
Single race.

At the end of the race, there would be a closing ceremony and prize-giving, and everyone would set sail back to their homelands this time.
When we went out to the course, the wind was hitting 15 knots from 120 degrees. Meteorology sites indicated it would increase in the coming hours.
Chief Race Officer Fatmagül YAZGAN was announcing that the course would be MİYC Course 4 A. Racers would run approximately 8 nautical miles.

Without wasting time, IRC 1-2-3 start at 10:40, IRC 4-5-6 and ALOA 27s start at 10:45.

IF YOU HAVE A SPINNAKER, YOU HAVE TROUBLES
Hard start, continuing with aggressive maneuvers.
Off Yalancı Boğaz, the wind reaches 20-25 knots.
In these locations, PİRİ REİS ÜNİVERSİTESİ (Monkey Mischief), racing in IRC 5 class, is having trouble with their spinnaker. They can't get it under control.
When the efforts spent on this are crowned with engine start, they have to withdraw from the race.
The weather is getting harsher, racing the fleet in the early hours is the right decision. Even in the inner harbor, waves are starting to form.
At the end of the finishes, the teams head towards Netsel Marina with the sound of the melancholic whistle that blows for the last time for them.

PROTEST ON THE HORIZON
Everyone is waiting for the results but there is a protest, the hearing outcome will be awaited.
YAŞAR UNIVERSITY (Lemon) files a protest against YEDİTEPE UNIVERSITY (Mersin Yelken Akademisi).
They file it but at the end of the hearing YEDİTEPE UNIVERSITY (Mersin Yelken Akademisi) completes the hearing without penalty.
And the results are announced; YEDİTEPE UNIVERSITY (Mersin Yelken Akademisi) also gets a false start at the 4th race. Then they restart and finish ahead in their group.

At the end of the 4th race;
In IRC 1 YEDİTEPE UNIVERSITY (Mersin Yelken Akademisi)
In IRC 2 İSTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (Keyif 60)
In IRC 3 İSTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (Armador)
In IRC 4 DOĞUŞ UNIVERSITY (Pupa)
In IRC 5 ODTÜ (Boomerang) p>

First the awards ceremony and then the cake cutting.

İHSAN KALAYCI
“We are organizing the 10th Campus Cup.
These are organizations held at sea to prepare young people for tomorrow.
Over 500 young people are on the course. While half of them were previously involved in this sport, the other half are joining for the first time. This is an achievement.
We are initiating and striving to make them permanent.
There is truth in what our young people said at the briefing. We see that we need to take what we have developed so far even further.
In line with their demands, we will elevate our race one step higher.
Next year, we will probably extend our race to 3 days, determine and announce the groupings and intervals in advance. This way, our young people will also decide how they want to race.”
