Can You Become a Captain in Quarantine?

The pandemic, which has significantly increased its impact worldwide, is also affecting life in our country. All measures to prevent and control the spread of the pandemic are being implemented nationwide.

These measures have very rapidly affected our seas, maritime traffic, marine tourism, and maritime education.

Precautions taken in marinas are being increased, and harbor departures are being brought under control.

Some marinas have temporarily suspended boat haul-out and launch operations to minimize contact.

In light of these developments, Fethiye-based Açık Deniz Akademi has designed a free online training program specifically for the quarantine days when we must stay home, aiming to satisfy the longing for the sea and increase the knowledge of those curious about seamanship.

In this free program called Open to Everyone Deniz Akademi, basic level theoretical knowledge is now being presented via the Zoom platform to those who want to learn sailing yacht seamanship.

The program consists of two separate modules, with topics divided into those that can be taught from home and from the boat: #evdeneveyelken (from home to home sailing) and #teknedeneveyelken (from boat to home sailing). The first module, #evdeneveyelken, is delivered by instructors from their homes via the Zoom platform with the help of presentations and videos.

The second module, #teknedeneveyelken, will be delivered with demonstrations from the boat once commercial vessels are permitted to go to sea.

In the first module, #evdeneveyelken, content is taught over 6 days with 2 lessons each day. The first week's classes started on April 11, and registration is currently being accepted for the second week, which will begin on April 18.

Each week, classes will run from Saturday to Thursday, and on Fridays, an exam will be offered to those who wish to take it. Those who successfully pass the online exam will be awarded an Open to Everyone Maritime Academy Certificate by the school.

The training provides basic level theoretical knowledge to those who want to learn sailing yachting, with topics including Introduction to the Boat, Seamanship, Ropes – Knots, Meteorology, Anchoring, Collision Avoidance at Sea, Navigation Aids, Sail Knowledge, Navigation, Maritime Communications, Boat Maneuvering, and Life at Sea.

Açık Deniz Akademi will offer special paid 3-day practical training courses on boats in Fethiye at later dates for those who successfully complete the #evdeneveyelken (sail from home to home) and #teknedeneveyelken (sail from boat to home) modules during quarantine days. Those who wish can participate in these training courses and obtain the Turkish Sailing Federation Tuyep Fundamentals of Sailing Yachting (YY1) certificate by completing the exams.
